Appointments Explained

The practice would like to take this opportunity to explain how our appointment system works, and the various types appointments. The reception staff have been instructed to ask you for brief details of your reason for contacting us.  This is so they can offer you the most appropriate service or appointment.
This may include a service outside of the Practice who are better equipped to help such as pharmacies, minor injuries, minor eye service or mental health teams. 
The appointments below can be conducted via telephone, face-to-face or video consultations as appropriate to the clinical need. Patients can request appointments using our telephone system, in person at the reception desk and using our online request form.
We do not operate a walk-in service for appointments.
 
Healthcare Assistant appointments: These clinical staff perform a wide range of appointments, such as blood pressure measures, blood tests, dressings, ECGs (when requested by the GPs). These appointments can be booked in advance with some urgent appointments available on the day.
 
Nurse Associate: A nurse associate is a clinical support role that bridges the gap between the pratice healthcare assistants and practice nurse. A nurse associate helps with dressings and chronic disease management. 
 
Practice Nurse appointments: Our nurses offer a wide range of services, such as diabetes reviews, asthma reviews, dressings, smears, childhood immunisations, travel immunisations, adult vaccinations, and injections. These appointments can be booked in advance with some urgent appointments available on the day. Our nursing team includes practice nurses and nurse associates. Nurse associates work between the healthcare assistant and practice nurse, and can help with dressings and chronic disease management.
 
Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANP) and Paramedics: Our ANPs and paramedics can see many patients with complex care needs and can see many clinical conditions that would also be seen by a GP. These appointments can be booked in advance and on the day.  Some ANP’s also specialise in minor operations, Women’s Health such as menopause and contraception (including coil and implant clinics).
 
In-House Pharmacist: The practice has Pharmacists and a pharmacy technician, who can conduct medication reviews, COPD and asthma reviews, and some clinical conditions that would be seen by a GP. These appointments can be booked in advance with some urgent appointments available on the day.
 
GP appointments: Routine appointments: These appointments are for non-urgent clinical issues that cannot be dealt with by any of the above clinical staff. Appointments can be booked 14 days ahead and on the day.  Our GP’s also carry out some minor operations.
Urgent appointments for matters that clinically cannot wait more than a couple of days and cannot be dealt with by any of the above clinical staff.
 
Attached staff:
These staff work across several Practices and are not at Dawley every day. These support staff can often refer into specialist services when appropriate.
 
Physiotherapist: Physiotherapists see our patients who are struggling with musculoskeletal problems. They can give joint injections and are able to give advice on exercises that can help relieve symptoms.
 
Social Prescriber: Social Prescribers help patients with their social needs; such as finances, housing and benefits. They will speak to patients who are lonely, are socially isolated or need help with self-care.
 
Care co-ordinator: The Practice care co-ordinator supports our patients with cancer diagnosis and palliative patients.  They will help with any social, financial or emotional needs. 
 
Mental Health Practitioner:  The practice mental health practitioner will support our adult patients with their mental health needs such as anxiety and depression.

District NursesA referral from your GP is Required for the district nurse to visit you at home and there must be a clinical reason for you being housebound.
 
The practice also works closely with attached staff such as Phlebotomists, District Nurses, Midwife, Health Visitors, Chiropodist, Dietician, Counsellor and Community Psychiatric Nurses
